A major attraction to visitors to Osoyoos, BC. in South Okanagan, the Spotted Lake is a saline endorheic alkali lake. The term is due to the fact that it has a closed drainage basin, which retains water and allows no outflow, and contain high concentrations of minerals such calcium, sodium sulphates, and magnesium sulfate.

During the summer months, much of the water in the lake evaporates, leaving behind large spots of minerals. The color of the spots depends on the mineral composition left behind: white, green, blue, or pale yellow. The spots mainly consists of the mineral magnesium sulfate residue, which crystallizes in the summer to form harden natural “walkways” around and between the spots. The lake used to be frequented for its therapeutic properties.  Photo credit.
